Spider Man vs. Batman

Spider Man vs. Batman

OK – I don’t know if this video from the Sean Ward Show Youtube video channel will stand the test of time exactly. I found it equal parts hilarious and stupid. It’s a superhero spoof that features a “battle” between Spider Man and Batman that sprawls across Toronto on a summer night in July of 2012. The initial conflict centers around the pair’s competing movies but quickly escalates – devolves is probably a better description – into a general rivalry on principle. What I enjoyed the most is how lame these guys are. Not only are they ridiculously ineffective superheroes – Spider Man, in his red Converse hi-tops, clearly needs to drop at least 30 pounds, and it’s hard not to laugh at Batman’s lack of mobility in his suit and struggles with his cape – but both “superheroes” are petulant and insecure. The video reminds of that quote from the French novelist, Colette: “You will do foolish things, but do them with...

No More Ideology

No More Ideology

The title of this post is “No More Ideology.” Right. Like that’s ever going to happen. America at its best – or at least at its most productive – requires an enemy. And when we don’t have one, we turn on each other. I remember at the height of the financial crisis and Great Recession, circa 2008-2009, I told a good friend that the United States was like a two-headed dog barking at itself. Except this time it was much worse because there was no longer any food in the bowl. I’m so tired of the warring minorities of ignorant bigots on the right and condescending snobs on the left demonizing each other and promoting a vision of fear and hate for the rest of us.   Ideology is Not Reality Ideology is not reality – it’s the reckless and dishonest decision to replace reality with a fantasy that gives us the illusion of superiority. But, of course, when enough individuals embrace an ideological mindset – no matter where on the political spectrum it originates – reality itself changes. It leads to a culture of extremes – increased polarization, decreased humanity, and nightmare results such as Nazi Germany, Stalin Russia, the American Civil War. So here’s my humble attempt to remind all of us that we are not our own worst enemy – unless we choose to make ourselves so.   U.S. Political Anti-Ideology Videos                                ...

Paradoxes About Life

Paradoxes About Life

Fitness and personal development blogger Chris McCombs just put together a pretty cool post about the paradoxes of life – 39 Strange Things About Life. Technically, they’re not all paradoxes, but they are insightful and serve the important function of realigning your perspective. It’s altogether too easy to get bogged down in the details of our day to day stresses (or as E.M. Forster put it 103 years ago in Howard’s End, “this outer life of telegrams and anger”). But real life – the mostly invisible one we tend to neglect because the artificial one masking it keeps us so distracted and busy – is magical and strange and redemptive. In fact, Chris McCombs addresses that himself with his #23: “We’re always trying to get stuff done so we can get to the things we actually wanna do.” Check out the full list here and let me know what you...

Fighting Off Lions and Tigers and Bears

Fighting Off Lions and Tigers and Bears

Never underestimate your ability to defeat a superior opponent. OK – maybe defeat isn’t the most accurate word. But when you’re up against lions and tigers and bears, and you survive the experience – you’ve earned the right to call it whatever you want. I’ve compiled some impressive accounts of individuals getting primal and fighting off some pretty scary beasts. Remember these the next time you think one of your goals is too hard to achieve. Another important lesson: when push comes to shove, just about anything can be a weapon – a samurai sword, a frying pan, a pen, even a pillow.   Fighting Off Mountain Lions     US Woman Fights Off Lion with Pen (BBC) Boy. 14, Fights Off Mountain Lion (NBC) Man Fights Off Mountain Lion with Frying Pan (Petersen’s Hunting)   Fighting Off Tigers Woman saves husband from tiger attack by beating it with a wooden ladle in Malaysian jungle (Daily Mail) Man fights off tiger attack in Malaysia (Arab Times) Man Fights Off Tiger in West Bengal (Times of India)   Fighting Off Bears   Punch in Nose Saves Man from Polar Bear (CBC News)   Your Turn So, what’s the scariest thing you’ve ever fought...

TobyGames

TobyGames

TobyGames is one of three YouTube video channels from Toby Turner of Annoying Orange fame/notoriety. YouTube hosts countless walkthrough videos posted by gamers – if you get stuck in a video game and can’t figure out how to proceed or, in my case, if you have a young child who gets stuck in a video game and you can’t figure it out either (don’t laugh – Lego Harry Potter can be tricky), doing a quick search on YouTube is a lifesaver – or at least a timesaver. But TobyGames isn’t exactly about finding the best walkthrough videos – it’s about being entertained. In a nutshell, Toby Turner is a maniac. I think he’s best described as a sort of One Man Mystery Science Theater 3000 Meets Video Games. Here are some of my favorite TobyGames videos . . .     Surgeon Simulator 2013 Do you technically need a rib cage to survive? I also enjoyed the reference to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.     Skyrim – Frosty the Dragon What can I say? I think Toby’s version is better than the original . . .     L.A. Noire Videos Watching Toby navigate the gritty post World War II world of Los Angeles as a Detective in RockStar Games’ L.A. Noire is quite an experience. His driving skills do improve over the course of the game, but not by much. And he would undoubtedly be a much better detective if he focused more on the actual game than his alternative universe running commentary. But, of course, his videos wouldn’t be nearly as hilarious either. Here are three of my favorite clips from Toby Turner playing L.A. Noire: Episode 26 – Crazy Car Jump Best Moments: @ 3:15 – Following a short, reckless ride through the streets of L.A., the Crazy Car Jump in question @ 3:56 – “I’m a great driver” @ 6:24 – Another leisurely drive through the city @ 9:01 – Leisurely drive ends with a unique parking job   Episode 80 – Ran Over My Partner Best Moments: @ 0:33 – Toby discovers the carnage from Episode 79 (which happens to be his partner’s car) still burning on roadway @ 1:00 –...
